Pen in hand
But before the words
Begin in letters
I think, I recall, and
I remember when:
The box theatre
Where our imaginations ran
Where you would meet me
and be my true friend
I look at this lined paper
This blank paper
And upon it and behind my eyes
I can see
All the world that you were to me
If only I had been better to you
I remember when:
The stage was where we played our games
Where we were all puppet and master and chain
A day where you laughed with me
Until the tears ran down your face
Days where you were onstage
And I was masked and veiled with the audience
Hidden
and we watched you and marveled
All laughter, all smiles,
All happiness, all cheer
Jewel-child
With a generous smile, a will,
and a love for all hearts
Choir-angel
Braiding melodies
With a soul that sang
and carried
and reached

I can only imagine
What you would look like
In all your glory
Wrapped, swathed, in your royal
Deep purple sash and gown
I can only imagine
How you appear in Heaven
